Mood Swings and Night Sweats and Brain Fog, Oh My!

Updated: Jul 3, 2024

We are born into this world without much thought to our amazing bodies - their shapes, their functions, and their abilities. As we grow, we come to learn more about ourselves and the bodies in which we are enveloped. For some, this is a journey filled with awe, joy, and excitement. For others, it is a journey filled with pain, frustration, and loss.

For women, our bodies are an ever-changing journey of experiences, and just as we (might) think we have mastered it...or maybe just accepted it...enter (cue Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5 in C Minor")...perimenopause.

Perimenopause, and eventually menopause, can hit women like a ton of bricks. The physiological changes, along with the psychological impact, can make even the strongest of women feel like they want to crawl into bed and pull the sheets up over their heads. But why does this "change" have such an impact on most women? Well, for starters, because we are really not prepared for it. Seriously - did anyone ever talk to you about perimenopause or menopause? Doctors don't truly discuss it, and when women try to express their concerns, it is often quickly dismissed as "just a part of life" and something we need to "just accept." Come again? Since when do symptoms such as mood swings, night sweats, expanding bellies, depression, insomnia, irritability, brain fog, and increased fatigue count as things we should just accept? And let's not get started on the fact that for most of us "mature" women, we grew up during a time when menstrual cycles were something to be hidden, not discussed. Girls were not allowed to speak of their periods...instead, we talked about how "Aunt Flo" had come for a visit. Pads (aka, "sanitary napkins"...) and tampons were bought with blushing cheeks and hidden in purses using cute containers or special concealers.

Perimenopause and menopause are stages in a woman's life that represent more than just no longer having to wear man-made devices to catch Aunt Flo, or being able to plan beach vacations without referencing the calendar, or being able to have unplanned sex without the worry of a pregnancy...of course, you might now worry about vaginal dryness and pain getting in the way, but let's not open up THAT can of worms!!

So what is a woman to do? How can she navigate the challenging journey ahead? Thankfully, there is hope! Integrative coaching and holistic techniques (such as EFT Tapping) can assist women in reducing the uncomfortable and sometimes paralyzing symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, and they can also pave the way for rediscovery and personal growth.

Yes, women are incredible, and our bodies are amazing. However, we still need support and guidance, kindness and empathy, encouragement and understanding. While perimenopause and menopause might be a natural part of a woman's life, there is nothing natural about the lack of preparation given to women approaching or enduring this life change. Instead of telling women to "suck it up, buttercup", let's start embracing them with the love and support they have offered to those around them in their many years of fruitful living!
